Week of 8-30-2010 The bigger they are, the harder they fall When someone uses this saying, they mean that the larger or more powerful something is (it could be a person, a country, or something else), the bigger the shock it will feel when a setback occurs.
Requirements- Neatness counts.
- The illustration should show a good effort, illustrate some aspect of the story, and be in color.
- The saying should be copied exactly with no errors.
The meaning is to be the "real or literal meaning." Real and literal mean the same thing in this context-- what we mean when we use the phrase. For example, the phrase, The bigger they are, the harder they fall," does not mean that bigger objects hit the ground harder than smaller objects. It does mean that a setback may affect a person more if that person has achieved more, or that the death or downfall of a famous person will attract more publicity. The meaning should be a complete fourth grade quality sentence. Among other things, a sentence has a period at the end. The "story" should be a story using the saying or phrase. It should not be another explanation of what the saying or phrase means. Make sure the actual words of the saying or phrase are used in the story. Check your spelling and grammar. If you use dialogue in your stories you must use quotation marks correctly. IIf you have forgotten how to use quotations in writing, look it up. The rules are simple and you might as well get it right from the start.
